How we score waterproofing companies in Rock County
Rock County Waterproofing Guide currently scores 42 waterproofing businesses serving the county. Every score on this site comes from the same rubric, applied the same way to every listing. This page explains what goes into that rubric, why we weight it the way we do, and where the data falls short.
The five signals, heaviest first
Each business gets a composite score from 0 to 100, built from five measured signals:
- Sentiment, 28%. A synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, weighing praise against complaints and looking for repeated themes rather than one-off gripes.
- Rating, 26%. The business's aggregate star rating on Google.
- Volume, 20%. How many reviews a business has, scaled logarithmically so a company with 300 reviews doesn't automatically crush one with 20 just because the number is bigger. Log scaling means the jump from 5 to 50 reviews matters more to the score than the jump from 500 to 550.
- Recency, 12%. How recently customers have left reviews. A company that hasn't had fresh feedback in years is a different bet than one reviewed last month.
- Completeness, 14%. Whether a listing has a phone number, a website, posted hours, and a street address. Basic, but it's the first thing a homeowner needs when a basement is taking on water.
Why sentiment carries the most weight
A star average by itself hides patterns. Two waterproofing companies can sit at the same 4.3 stars, but one of them might have a string of recent reviews all mentioning the same crew showing up late, or the same sump pump install that failed within a year, while the other's complaints are scattered and minor. The star number alone won't tell you that. Reading what people actually wrote, and looking for what repeats, is the only way to catch it. That's why sentiment is weighted above the raw rating, not instead of it: both matter, but sentiment gets you closer to what's actually going on with a company's work.
Why the other signals matter for this trade
Rating still carries real weight because it's the simplest public signal of how customers felt overall, and it's worth comparing against the sentiment read. Volume matters because a 5.0 rating built on four reviews tells you a lot less than a 4.6 built on 150; the log scale keeps a handful of glowing reviews from outscoring a long track record. Recency matters because waterproofing companies change crews, ownership, and quality over time, and a review from 2019 doesn't say much about who shows up at your door today. Completeness matters because a listing missing a phone number or hours is friction you don't need when you're dealing with a wet basement and want to call someone now.
The honest limits
We synthesize review themes rather than republishing full reviews, and every listing links out to the source on Google so you can read the originals yourself. Businesses with few recent reviews produce a shakier signal no matter how the math works, so those listings carry a low-confidence label. Treat that label as a real caution, not a footnote.
Scores are earned, not sold or edited
Every score comes from this rubric and the underlying data, full stop. Paid placement, on pages where it exists, is always labelled clearly and never changes a score. If any list on this site has picks or ordering that an editor reviewed by hand, that's disclosed on the page itself. Nothing here is edited to favor an advertiser or a preferred vendor.
Who runs this and how to reach us
Rock County Waterproofing Guide is an independent directory built to help homeowners in Rock County, Wisconsin find waterproofing companies for basement and below-grade work. Listings come from publicly available business information and are checked for relevance to that trade specifically. We are not a waterproofing contractor ourselves and we don't sell placement in the rankings.

FAQ
- How often are scores updated?
- Scores are recalculated as new review and listing data comes in for each of the 42 businesses tracked. Because recency and sentiment are part of the rubric, a business's score can shift as fresh reviews appear.
- Can a business pay to improve its score?
- No. Scores come only from the rubric described on this page: sentiment, rating, volume, recency, and completeness. Paid placement, where it exists on the site, is always labelled separately and has no effect on the score itself.
- Why do some listings show a low-confidence label?
- When a business has few recent reviews, the sentiment and rating signals are less reliable no matter how they're weighted. We flag those listings as low-confidence so you know the score rests on thinner data.
- Do you publish the full text of reviews?
- No. We synthesize recurring themes from recent reviews rather than republishing them, and each listing links out to Google so you can read the original reviews and judge for yourself.
